Course Project Update - Spring Update - April 3, 2019

Spring has finally arrived, although not as early as usual!  Normally, we begin mowing the course near the beginning of March, however this year the course was completely covered in snow through March 12th!  The record snowfall we received this winter melted in three days (March 12 – 14).  Because the ground was frozen, the rain and melting snow led to widespread, historic flooding throughout the region.  Fortunately, we saw minor impact to the golf course from the rapid melting snow and high water flows.

The golf course is buzzing with activity!  Last week the green covers were removed.  This week greens and fairways received the first mowing of the season on Tuesday, April 2nd.

Green covers were used over the winter months to protect the newly seeded greens.  Covers were removed the last week of March.  As you can see from the photo above, the covers did their job!

Hole #11 Green receives the first mowing of the season on April 2nd.  As you can see, the rest of the course is still emerging from dormancy.  The greens were protected from the elements.  The covers allowed water to permeate through, but provided a "greenhouse-like" growing environment for the turf.

Hole #14 Green receives the first mowing of the season on April 2.  The turkeys were busy this winter checking out the new bunkers!

As we enter the month of April, the snow has melted, the ground is frost-free, and the golf course is drying out.  Conditions have progressed enough to move forward with the golf course project!

LaBar, the construction company, arrived over the weekend and was back on the course on Monday, April 1st.

LaBar got right to work laying the first load of sod on April 1st.  Luckily, Todd Valley Farms was not affected by the flooding.
