Course Project Update - Green Renovation Process - September 6, 2018

Following is an overview of the next steps in the green renovation process completed by LaBar and the OCC Grounds Maintenance Center team.

After the OCC GMC team has completed the process of incorporating amendments, intermediate mix and greens mix, the LaBar team steps back in. LaBar utilizes the GreenScan3D equipment to measure the surface of the green to ensure it matches exactly what Keith Foster directs.  Keith Foster visits the course at least one or two days per week to adjust and approve the green surfaces.
After Keith Foster views the green in person and provides final approval of the surface, the OCC GMC team starts the re-grassing process.  Two team members fertilize the surface, add a granular fungicide, then lightly rake by hand with a steel tine leaf rake to incorporate the amendments into the surface.

OCC GMC staff will now seed the green with a specific seeder chosen for quality of uniformity in distributing seed onto the surface of the green.  The green is seeded in two directions, lightly raked by hand, and then rolled by hand.
After the green has been seeded, the OCC GMC staff covers the entire green with a fabric cloth and waters the green with the overhead irrigation system.  The fabric cover aids in germination by helping to keep the seed in place during windy and rainy conditions.  The cover stays in place for 4 to 5 days, until we begin to see seedlings emerge.
On Hole #14, the cover was removed five days after seeding.  You can just see the seedlings beginning to emerge across the green!
This photo shows a close-up of the baby grass emerging through the sandy particles.  Our goal during this period is to keep the soil damp and to keep animals off of the green.  We install temporary barrier fence around each green for protection.
